Breeder's Cup first day result!
Juvenile Turf--Hi It A Bomb dropped a bomb by coming out on top in a blanket finish.
Dirt Mile--by far the most impressive race of the day. Heavy favorite Liam's Map was off a step slow, and got stuck behind a wall of horses as a result. And he's a front-runner. He tried to go through a hole; it closed on him. He didn't get free until the homestretch--and then he was finally able to take off and won going away. Sure sign of a tough horse. And seeing his namesake--a Special Forces Lt. Colonel--in the winner's circle was touching.
Juvenile Fillies Turf-- Catch A Glimpse couldn't be caught once she got loose in the stretch.
Distaff--Stopchargingmaria charged to a hard-fought victory, and survived a Steward's inquiry on top of that (she and runner-up Stellar Wind bumped a little in the homestretch, but not enough to affect the outcome of the race).
All in all, a great 1st day. Bring on tomorrow!
Hopefully, I'll do better at picking winners tomorrow. Didn't have any today! Here's how bad I did--
Juvenile Turf: Airoforce--2nd, Cymric--8th, Camelot Kitten--12th, Azar--13th
Dirt Mile: Lea--2nd, Wicked Strong--4th, Bradester--9th
Juvenile Fillies: Alice Springs--2nd, Nemoralia--3rd, Sapphire Kitten--4th, Harmonize--6th
Distaff: Sheer Drama--4th, I'm A Chatterbox--8th, Wedding Toast--10th, Got Lucky--11th

And the 2nd day of the Breeder's Cup was even better! Although once again, they couldn't be bothered to air the first TWO races--the Juvenile Fillies and the Turf Sprint! Racing started at noon; the broadcast didn't start until 1! Just had to cram in a couple more college football previews...again.
Juvenile Fillies: 1st--Songbird, 2nd--Rachel's Valentina (Curlin x Rachel Alexandra), 3rd--Dothraki Queen (think a Game Of Thrones fan named this one? )
Turf Sprint: 1st--Mongolian Saturday, 2nd--Lady Shipman, 3rd--Green Mask
Filly and Mare Sprint--Wavell Avenue surprised everybody by winning. Last year's winner, Judy The Beauty, was 5th.
Filly and Mare Turf--'Never dismiss a Kitten on the turf' is always good advice, and it was here as Stephanie's Kitten ran off with the win.
Sprint--Runhappy ran off with this one, and how! And the next day, his trainer was removed and replaced by the racing manager...who had been his previous trainer...until he got hurt. God help this one, I think he's gonna need it....
Mile--Tepin beat the boys, and made it look easy.
Juvenile--Nyquist skated off with this one. I say 'skated' because he's named for an NHL player (can't remember the guy's first name or his team)
Turf--The Euro filly, Found, was the one who found the winner's circle, and beat Europe's top runner, Golden Horn, in the process.
Classic--The Pharoah reigns! Seriously, it looked like a repeat of his Belmont win, only more impressive. It actually reminded me of Secretariat's last race. American Pharoah is now the only horse to pull off the grand slam of winning the Triple Crown and the BC Classic.
I didn't use past performances to pick winners in these races, just went by the odds, tried to stay away from heavy favorites and big longshots--and picked the winners of every race from the F&M Turf to the Classic! Maybe I should just go by odds now....

It's described at the end of the show as "a sizzling novel of the horse race of the century, where greed, wealth, and lust were a winning combination" (which I see is also written on the cover).
