Chick With Brains
Genuine Reward, a son of 1980 Kentucky Derby-winning filly Genuine Risk, is the newest resident of Old Friends in Kentucky.
Genuine Risk was a flop as a broodmare, she had great difficulty both getting in foal and staying in foal. She lost all her foals except Genuine Reward and his younger half-brother, Count Our Blessing. Neither of them ever raced. Genuine Reward was standing in Utah as a sire of polo ponies prior to coming to Old Friends. Count Our Blessing was gelded and became a show horse under the name Westley.

Jockey Trevor McCarthy went to the hospital after his horse in the Miss Woodford Stakes at Monmouth Park clipped another horse's heels and unseated him. He complained of a really bad headache, and is being checked out for a possible concussion or neurological issues.
His horse wasn't hurt; she kept running.

Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner War Emblem, who was pensioned from stud duty in Japan, will become the newest resident of Old Friends in September. He'll join fellow Derby winner Silver Charm and fellow Belmont winner Sarava...who cost War Emblem his chance at the Triple Crown.
War Emblem was a notoriously reluctant breeder from the very start of his stud career. He's sixteen, but has only sired 118 foals.

Florida Derby winner Materiality has been retired with a soft-tissue injury.
He only ran five times and retired with an injury ...if I was a breeder, he's the last horse I would send a mare to.

RIP John Nerud! The Hall of Fame trainer was 102!
He trained a number of champions, including stakes winner Intentionally and the champion sprint filly Ta Wee...who carried 140 pounds in a couple of her races and still won them.
Another of his champs was Gallant Man, who was second in the 1957 Kentucky Derby. True story--Gallant Man's owner had a dream a few nights before the race that the jockey, Bill Shoemaker, would misjudge the finish line and lose the race. 'The Shoe' dismissed the dream, insisting he would never do something so stupid. One guess as to what happened in the race. Yep, Shoe blew it, and Iron Liege got by them to win. Gallant Man went on to win the Belmont Stakes, though.
Nerud's biggest champion was Dr. Fager, who's considered one of the best of all time. Nerud owed his life to the horse's namesake, a neurosurgeon who operated on Nerud when he suffered a head injury after being thrown by a horse.
