Four-time GR1 winner Princess of Sylmar has been retired.
She was a favorite of mine, partly because she was a PA-bred. I remember when she let everyone know she was one to watch by winning the Kentucky Oaks as a 38-1 longshot.
Her name actually comes from where she was born--Sylmar Farm. It gets its name from its location on the PA/MD border.

Untapable won the Cotillion Stakes at Parx. Bayern won the Pennsylvania Derby, California Chrome tanked and finished 6th of 7.
Last year's 3-year-old champion Will Take Charge has been retired with a suspensory injury. He goes to Three Chimneys Farm next year to begin stallion duty. He'll be in demand, between his race record and his pedigree (Unbridled's Song x Take Charge Lady).

Eventful day of racing!
Tonalist was a convincing winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Wicked Strong got cut off by Moreno, clipped his heels, and lost rider Rajiv Maragh. Wicked Strong didn't appear to be hurt, he ran loose, but Maragh went to the hospital with a possible broken arm. Moreno was disqualified for interference and was placed last, which he deserved.
American Pharaoh ran away with the Frontrunner Stakes.
Emollient earned a hard-fought win in the Rodeo Drive Stakes. Scary moment on the turn when Moulin de Mougin slipped and fell! It was scary to see, she rolled completely over, I mean legs-straight-up-in-the-air over, before jumping up and running off. Thankfully, both she and jockey Mike Smith were unhurt.
Shared Belief fought for his win in the Awesome Again Stakes after Sky Kingdom deliberately forced him wide on both turns while Sky Kingdom's stablemate, Fed Biz, set a blazing pace on the lead.

Rajiv Maragh had surgery on his broken arm--plates and screws. No word yet on how long he'll be sidelined.
Victer Espinoza was given a seven-day suspension for his ride on Sky Kingdom--'careless riding', according to the track stewards. Espinoza hasn't decided yet whether or not he'll appeal it. Sky Kingdom's trainer, Bob Baffert, is insisting he didn't tell Espinoza to interfere with Shared Belief.
There was more drama today, unfortunately. Two horses went down in a spill at Monmouth, and one had to be put down. No word on the other one. One of the jockeys was unhurt, the other went to the hospital with a bruised hip; they wanted to make sure he wasn't more seriously hurt.
In a race for two-year-olds at Woodbine, two of the horses threw their riders and ran loose; one had to be scratched as a result. An outrider was injured while trying to round them up; no word yet on how bad.
ht2, if you want, you can watch the race replays at www.bloodhorse.com. They may be on youtube, as well.

Suffolk Downs in Boston closed for good after 79 years. New England horse racing is now officially dead; Suffolk was the last track standing. There used to be 17 racetracks in New England.
They were hoping to stay afloat by getting a casino license, but the only one for the area was awarded to Steve Wynn instead.
It's been a rough time for racetracks. We lost Hollywood Park last year, and now we've lost Suffolk. And we may lose Colonial Downs in Virginia, too; the owner is saying 'take my deal, or we close'.
