Welcome to Twilight Zone Cafe's first Astonishing Race. user posted image

This format is very similar to an Amazing or Astounding Race, including the following rules:

1. Only one turn per person per day (Eastern Time).
2. Minimum of 12 hours between turns for the same person.

We'll start with 40 episodes - namely, SyFy's recent New Year's Eve Marathon Top 40. (See this post for full results.)

For 24 rounds, the game will proceed as follows:

Round 1 will begin with a List containing all 40 episodes, an empty Pit Stop section, and an empty Eliminated section.
On each turn, remove an episode you like from the List, and put it in the Pit Stop. Once you have saved a previously unsaved episode, you may not change your decision.
When there is only one episode left in the List, that episode will be Eliminated. Then the episodes in the Pit Stop will form a new List for the next round.

After 24 episodes have been Eliminated by this process, the 16 survivors will enter head-to-head competition against each other, with the winner of each match-up being determined by members' votes. This will leave 8 survivors. Further rounds will leave 4 survivors, then 2, then 1. Full details will follow at the appropriate time. Members' input is welcome!

Veterans of an Amazing Race or Astounding Race can probably skip the next post. Others may find it helpful - especially those who'd like to join the fun, but can't currently copy and paste. The post after that will introduce our 40 contestants.

Various:

Why a minimum of 12 hours between turns? Isn't the "one turn per day (Eastern time)" rule enough? The 12 hour rule prevents the night-time crowd from having an option the day-time crowd doesn't; namely, the option of posting two turns very close together. Thanks to Major and ChesterfieldKing for suggesting that we deal with this situation.

What if I can't currently copy and paste? Try reading this - and please feel free to ask for further help in the Site Comments forum, or off the board, from the Cafe member of your choice (definitely including me!

).

Or, you can use either of the following two methods to play:

Method One

1. Click the "Quote" button in the upper right-hand corner of the post with the most recent List - just as if you were going to quote the post.
2. In the box where you'd enter your new post, type two letters of your own choice.
3. Click "Preview Post" on the bottom (not "Add Reply").
4. Now, go down to the "Enter your Post" box. Delete both tags in your message--one of them will be at the beginning, and the other will be almost at the end. Also delete the two letters you typed in during Step 2.

You now have a post that is an exact repeat of the one above it. Before posting it, delete any episode you like from the List, and add it to the Pit Stop. Then click "Add Reply," and you're all set.

Method Two
(adapted from Dan Hollis's instructions here):

1. Click the "Quote" button on the post with the most recent List.
2. Click in the box where the quoted message appears, just as if you were going to type something there.
3. Then hit your "Ctrl" and "A" keys at the same time. This will highlight the whole box.
4. Next, hit your "Ctrl" and "X" keys at the same time. This will erase the box, but that's OK. The message is still in the system's memory.
5. Next, click in the "Enter your Post" box, just as if you were going to type something. Then hit your "Ctrl" and "V" keys at the same time. The message that you just erased will re-appear. Trust me.

Now delete any episode you like from the List, and add it to the Pit Stop. Then click "Add Reply," and you're all set.
