I decided to start this thread today. The BBWAA Hall of Fame choice(s), if any, will be announced at 3 PM Eastern (noon Pacific). The smart money says Barry Larkin will be inducted, and probably no one else. Here's the latest I've seen: http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/1/9/2693251/h...unced-date-time

Here are the complete voting results.

Jack Morris, Jeff Bagwell, and Lee Smith were also listed on a majority of ballots, but fell short of the required 75%. Of the three, Bagwell is probably the only one whose career value is on a Hall of Fame level. But they'll probably all get in eventually, barring a steroids revelation.

Tim Raines is just behind them in the vote, and, like Bagwell, should be in already. Here's a "Raines for the HOF" site: http://www.raines30.com/

Great idea to start this thread now, Bevis.

Congrats to Larkin.

Edgar Martinez clocked in at 36.5%. Mariners fans know that with all the divided opinion over the DH the road could be a long, slow crawl to the HOF, but we are hoping that somehow, someway he will get in.

Very happy to see Larkin make it into the Hall of Fame! twilightzonewor/clap.gif

Through all the Reds games I went to growing up during the 90's, I was never able to get Larkin's autograph (and we waited by the player's garage after every game). It wasn't until September 22, 2002, the final game at Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field, that I was able to meet and talk with Barry. He signed a few autographs for me and everyone else down in the parking garage and seemed to be a really nice guy.

The Mariners and Yankees made a trade (pending physicals) with each other. The Mariners gave up a very talented young pitcher in Michael Pineda, and the Yankees gave up a very talented young hitter in (catcher/DH) Jesus Montero. I hate to see Pineda go, but after two seasons of historically bad offense the M's are desperate to get some decent hitting. And the M's have a few more top pitching prospects who are about to "crash the scene" within the next year, so pitching is something they can replace.

Now, where will Prince Fielder end up....

I thought the Cubs were going to make a pretty strong push to get Fielder but the latest I've heard is those talks have cooled off considerably.

A Miami Marlins outfielder by the name of Logan Morrison used the "Prince" name to play a practical joke on the sports world recently. He tweeted: "Just heard from my boy that Prince to Seattle is a done deal…" It turned out "Prince" was indeed headed to Seattle, but it was the musician and not the ballplayer. Then after things started buzzing he tweeted: “Oh $hit, you guys thought I meant the 1B from Milwaukee. My bad." Apparently, this guy is something of a knucklehead.

The news on the Gary Carter front is not good.

Gary Carter’s fight with brain cancer takes turn for the worse; new tumors found

The article is from the New York Daily News, and has a bit of a Mets slant to it. Carter no doubt shone brighter in New York's spotlight than in Montreal's, and his most successful team was the World Champion 1986 New York Mets. But Carter himself played longer and better for the Expos. Anyway, sad news.

Prince Fielder to the Tigers for 9 years, $214 million. I'm glad the Mariners passed on trying to outbid the Tigers. It probably would have taken 10 years and $225+ million for him to want to sign with the M's.

I'm with you, TZRider, I'm glad the Cubs didn't get in to the biding war for Fielder. IMO, that's waaay too much money for him. He's a slugger, no doubt about it but not $214 million worth. Just one man's opinion.

Miguel Cabrera is willing to move from 1B to 3B to accomodate Fielder, which is nice of him. But wasn't he moved from 3B in the first place because he wasn't very good at it?

I also agree with the previous comments. It's hard to imagine that the Tigers will get their money's worth out of this deal, but I suppose anything can happen.

They lost Victor Martinez for the year. So in 2012, all Prince will be doing is replacing him. Martinez drove in 103 runs last year. Prince can’t produce THAT much more than that. He may cause Cabrera to walk a little more and he will hit 30 more homeruns.

Cabrera’s move to third will hurt the Tiger’s defense for the next three years.

He joins a first place team and solidifies them as the odds on favorite to win the central in 2012.

So what would make it worth it in the next nine years? He will probably miss a couple of years in total time on the DL. How many championships make his signing worth it? One? Two? Is it a bust if they don’t win it all?

They will have Cabrera and Verlander for the next three years, but what about after that? The last six years of Prince’s deal could be ugly. He may not have the same support around him during the wrong end of a long term deal. The Tigers message is clear: Now is the time to win.

I just learned of some sad news that would affect Phillies fans. Longtime broadcaster Andy Musser died this past Sunday. The only reason I found out is that I was watching the Nets play the 76ers, and I thought back to my days at Cornell when I listened to Musser call 76ers games on WCAU radio. Then I saw a lot of him on a national level, on Phillies telecasts, and on Knicks games. I wondered whatever happened to him, so I looked him up in Wikipedia. Like Susan Gordon, he never had his own page until he passed away, and this article was created only two days ago.

Thanks to Dr. Moreau for surprising me with this signature. It beats peach brandy!

The Cubs finally got rid of Big Z. Zambrono could have and should have been a great pitcher but turned out to be a head case instead and an overpaid head case at that. IMO, addition by subtraction, good riddance.

The sports radio knuckleheads in Seattle are trying to run Ichiro out of town. This is the last year of his contract and many of them are saying they don't want him back. He never goes on the radio shows and rarely does interviews, and when he does do the rare interview he never does them in English (even though he speaks almost perfect English) and that rubs them the wrong way apparently, so they are out to get him.

They've been trying to paint him as a "bad guy" for a few years now. The M's have declined to have any contract talks with him until this season is over, so this could indeed be his last year as a Mariner, depending on what kind of season he has.

Fans love to get jumpy at the first sight of trouble. He had 184 hits. 40 stolen bases. He only had a low average (for him) and now “he sucks.” They did the same thing in NY with Jeter last year. Then he hit close to .300 again and no one says a word.
