I just read part of a biography of Buster Keaton (part only because it was written rather boringly). In the latter half of the 1950s and into the 1960s, Keaton was critical of several of his contemporary actors for not being familiar with rock 'n roll and for not being familiar with Beatles music. He was one silent film legend who kept up with the present.

He also ended up in a few of the beach movies. Some people feel embarrassed seeing him in them, but he seems to be havng a good enough time in them, and he seems to be having a GREAT time in "Pajama Party." Anyone who likes Buster Keaton and hasn't seen that one should catch it.

And, let's not forget his hilarious sketch in the diner on Candid Camera from the early '60s. Personally, that's my favorite sketch from the whole show and the funniest thing I ever saw Buster Keaton do. Seeing as how he can make laugh doing just about anything, that should show you how much I break up watching him in the diner.

That and his half-silent, half-talkie Twilight Zone episode and beach party movies make it all the more sad and tragic that he was included in that heart-wrenching scene as a Hollywood "has-been" playing cards in Sunset Boulevard, with H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson.

That Zone episode seems to be trying to build a bridge between the past and the present.

That's why I almost never go along with the idea of has-beens - because instead of being mean, it can be just plain off the mark, since a "has-been" can bounce right back any time.

There's a movie than ended up on Mystery Science Theatre called "City Limits," and it had both James Earl Jones and Kim Catrall. The MST guidebook called it something like "a movie with James Earl Jones during a low point in his career and Kim Catrall during about the HIGHEST point in HER career."
In spite of being a huge fan of MST, and NOT beng a fan of Sex and the City, I always want to laugh at how wrong that remark ended up being.

My favorite thing of Buster on You Tube is "This is Your Life," followed by his "Candid Camera" segments. I wish these would become available on DVD. Offhand does anyone know how to connect a computer so you can play stuff directly from You Tube on your TV? Some friends did it at their place but they don't have either cable or satellite TV so it may be different.

His diner scenes are available on DVD in the Candid Camera collections. I can't remember the name of the biography, but it's so dully written, I'd recommend a different one.
