In New Zealand there was a 9 year old girl whose parents were embroiled in a custody battle for sole custody of her. The judge who presided over the case was angry because the little girl's FIRST name was: Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

He ordered that the parents change her name to something more normal, which they did. Do you think he did the right thing? Do you think he had the right to do that?

My thoughts are whoever named her that is sick and they weren't looking out for the child's best interest. When you aren't looking out for your child's best interest that makes you a bad parent. So I agree with the court's decision.

Childhood is painful for a lot of children... When you're a kid you get picked on for so many different things, especially names. Why would anyone sane and compassionate, as a parents, add more difficulty to it?

Check out he other names these people were giving to their kids: Fish and Chips, Violence, Sex Fruit...

I saw this, too. Hilarious but sad. And I absolutely agree with the judge's decision, for the reasons you gave.

Can't say I agree with the judge.

Judges are supposed to enforce the law not do whatever they please.

If the government thought the child was at risk, she should have been apprehended by the local child protection agency.

In my opinion the kid's name was stupid but I think it was the parent's decision to make.

I doubt if she went by anything other than Talula in any event.

... it's all gonna fade...

have to agree with Parker.
the name of the child has nothing to do with the case at hand. not even for defining the character (or lack thereof) of the parents. had this been an issue in 9 years, it could have been questioned and not allowed at birth with the legality of naming the child then.
i'm not defending the stupidity of the parents here, but i am saying that ONLY the charges of the case are what's relevant here and what may factor in as a product of the ruling. remanming the child should have to be made an entirely different case. but then, since when do judges create what dictates a new trial with the charge of something going against his personal opinion? that should not be allowed in any court, anywhere.

Perhaps the judge overstepped his authority, which may be different in New Zealand.

Years ago I remember reading that in Argentina laws were made against strange names as parents were calling their kids Rolling Down the Stairs and Bump on the Head. A law was passed in Texas that a name must fit on the official birth certificate after a mother gave her daughter the world's longest name and the birth certificate was two feet long! The child appeared on Oprah and goes by "Jamie."

Perhaps the judge overstepped his bounds, but that's going to save the child a lot of grief in the future. I'm also sure some shortened version was used to call her day to day, but what about when her whole name appears on a document or gets called out, yikes.

My mom heard about this on one of the newschannels, and she completely agreed with the judge's decision. According to the newscast she saw, the little girl was so embarrassed by her name, that she went around telling people her name was actually 'Kay'.

I agree with DPARKER.It WAS a stupid name but the judge had no right to make them change it.
I used to hate my middle name and whenever anybody asked me what it was i'd say i never had one.I am okay with it now,though
There was also an english guy who named his son after the england world cup squad (soccer/football team).
My bro named his son FOX IGNATIUS and he got a lot of flak from both my mother and i for that but now it's grown on us.

Most of the time the kids just take control later and shorten their names.

Frank Zappa was one of the first to try this one, naming his daughter 'Moon Unit'.

Having a merely strange name is not the same as having the name of the most evil individual in history. I remember reading about another parent wanting to name a child Adolf Hitler who was barred from doing so as it might negatively impact the child. The child's best chance with this name is to simply be known as "Dolf" and with any luck people will think his name is Rudolf. It seems better to adopt a whole new name, though.

Personally, I hate stupid names with a passion. That kid has to live their life with that name and in the early years, kids are completely ruthless and unforgiving. A stupid name is enough to bring about incessant teasing for a looooong time. A great site that sums up my thoughts on the whole subject can be found here. I pop on there every few weeks on the off chance another page of terrible names has been put together. The author's comments make it for me!

Regarding the judgement, I'm sure I saw somewhere that NZ have rules regarding stupid names. I found another source for the article here which mentions family units and the like. Personally, the judge was 100% right to do what they did. The kid hated the name and was in no position to do anything about it. I'd say that was a humanitarian cause worth getting involved in!

After spending most of the episode protesting the tradition, Carla finally relents to renaming her teenage son Gino to "Benito Mussolini Tortelli -- Gino, for short."

This guy claims he's not racist, but his kid's names say otherwise.

It also speaks badly of Wal-Mart that they agreed to the request.
